Syncly is a conceptual smart home application exploring how users can seamlessly connect and manage multiple IoT devices through a single mobile interface.
The project focuses on simplifying device onboarding and everyday control by designing a clear system for discovering, connecting, and organizing smart devices within the home environment.
This project was developed as part of an IoT design course.

The challenge
Smart home technology is designed to make everyday life easier, yet many device ecosystems introduce unnecessary complexity.
Users often struggle with:
confusing device pairing processes
unclear setup instructions
fragmented interfaces for controlling different devices
Instead of feeling seamless, managing smart devices can quickly become overwhelming.
The challenge was to design an experience that simplifies both device onboarding and daily interaction.
Solution
Syncly introduces a streamlined system for discovering, organizing, and controlling smart home devices.
The experience is centered around three core flows:
managing devices within rooms
guiding users through device setup
providing clear controls for everyday interactions.

The Strategy
The product direction focused on three key principles:
Simplify Device Setup
Provide a guided flow that clearly walks users through the connection process.
Match Users’ Mental Models
Organize devices by room to reflect how people think about their homes.
Reduce Cognitive Load
Prioritize the most relevant information & controls while keeping the interface visually clear.

Core Features
Room-Based Device Management
Devices are grouped by rooms to reflect how users naturally structure their homes. Each room screen displays connected appliances and provides quick access to their controls.
Dual Device Views
To support different interaction styles, Syncly introduces two viewing modes:
List View
A structured overview that provides detailed information and quick access to device controls.
Visual Map View
A spatial representation of devices within a room, helping users understand their home environment at a glance.
Guided Device Setup
Syncly includes a step-by-step onboarding flow that guides users through the device pairing process.
The setup flow includes:
scanning nearby devices via Bluetooth
selecting the correct device
connecting it to the home Wi-Fi network
confirming the setup
Breaking the process into clear steps reduces confusion and makes device setup more accessible.
Device Personalization
After connecting a device, users can:
assign it to a room
rename the device
select an icon
These options help keep the system organized as more devices are added.

Impact
Syncly demonstrates how a simplified onboarding flow and room-based organization can make smart home systems more intuitive for everyday users.
By focusing on clarity and structured setup processes, the concept reduces friction during device integration and supports easier management of multiple connected devices.
Reflection
This project strengthened my understanding of how mobile applications interact with IoT systems and highlighted the complexity behind seemingly simple smart home experiences.
It reinforced the importance of:
designing clear onboarding flows
aligning interfaces with users’ mental models
simplifying interactions when dealing with complex technology systems.
